Safety and Security

The GW Police Department (GWPD) has over 100 officers protecting the community twenty four hours a day, every day of the year.

GWPD continuously patrols Mount Vernon Campus throughout each day, provides crime prevention education to the community, and coordinates safety and security for a variety of special events that affect campus security throughout the year.

Students should feel free to engage officers if they have questions or concerns about any safety issues.

Other Mount Vernon Campus Services

The George Washington University Emergency Medical Response Group (EMeRG) is a student-based volunteer organization licensed to provide Basic Life Support Emergency Ambulance Service by the District of Columbia Department of Health.

EMeRG Ambulances are staffed by student volunteers licensed as Emergency Medical Technicians at the Basic level or higher in the District of Columbia.

Hours During the Academic Year

Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon Campuses

EMeRG responds to medical emergencies on both campuses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Mount Vernon Campus

In order to meet increased demand during peak service hours, EMeRG staffs its second ambulance on the Mount Vernon Campus from 6pm to 8am on Friday and Saturday nights.

Medical Emergencies

Call 202-994-6111 to receive rapid EMeRG ambulance service.

All ambulance transports provided by EMeRG are free. When the police department receives a call for a medical emergency GWPD officers are dispatched with EMeRG to all on-campus calls to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

EMeRG is able to communicate directly with DC Fire and EMS units as well as the DC Office of Unified Communications anytime there is an emergency that necessitates advanced life support or resources beyond the scope of what EMeRG is able to provide, such as heavy rescue.

EMeRG prides itself on rapid response times and the outstanding clinical standards established by the EMeRG Medical Director, a licensed physician with the GW Medical Faculty Associates Department of Emergency Medicine.

Claiming Items

For items lost on Mount Vernon Campus or on The Vern Express, please visit the GWPD security office in Ames Hall B313 or call 202-242-6110.

At the end of each day, items in the Mount Vernon Lost and Found are brought to the Office of Safety and Security in the Academic Center on the Foggy Bottom Campus. When turned in, they are logged in a record book and stored for thirty days.

Email inquiries can be made at [email protected]. Response to emails will usually be returned within 24 hours Mon-Fri.

Claiming Items for a Friend

To pick up a lost item for someone other than yourself, the item's owner must submit to the department a signed letter stating that they give their permission to the recipient to pick up their lost item. The letter should include a copy of the owner's ID, telephone number, full name, and signature.

The letter also must include the full name of the recipient. These requests can be mailed to the department or faxed to us at 202-994-6115 "Attn: Lost and Found".

Unclaimed Items

After a thirty day period, the items are donated to a local charity.

If your lost item is not in the lost and found when you check the first time, wait a few days and check back again.
