Mount Vernon Campus

The George Washington University’s Mount Vernon Campus is located in the verdant Berkley neighborhood of Northwest Washington DC, just three miles northwest of the Foggy Bottom Campus.

Mount Vernon provides a more traditional college campus than its Foggy Bottom counterpart while still offering students easy access to all that the nation’s capital has to offer, and is an integral part of the student experience at GW featuring a variety of academic, residential and social amenities and services for students.

Campus History

The campus was formerly the home of the Mount Vernon Seminary and College, a private women’s high school and college. This educational institution was founded in 1868 by Elizabeth J. Somers, who played an important role in promoting women's education.

In 1945, Somers Hall was established on the Mount Vernon Campus. It now houses the first-year women of the selective Elizabeth J. Somers Women's Leadership Program, who continue to promote Elizabeth J. Somers' vision for excellence in academic achievement, strong sense of community, and leadership development.

In 1997, the 121-year-old Mount Vernon College announced plans to merge with the George Washington University. In 1999, the last Mount Vernon College class graduated and on June 30, 1999 the campus officially became the Mount Vernon Campus of the George Washington University.

In 2010, West Hall was established, offering student housing, dining, a state-of-the-art fitness center, reservable event spaces, a recording studio, a dance studio, a blackbox theatre, and music practice rooms.
