University Writing

Students and professor in a classroom

The University Writing Program (UWP) is one of the largest academic units at GW and serves approximately 15,000 students per year.

First Year Writing

The First Year Writing division is responsible for the four-credit UW1020: Academic Writing course, which is required for all incoming undergraduate students. The faculty who teach these courses are located on the Mount Vernon Campus in Ames Hall.

Writing in the Disciplines

Once UW1020: Academic Writing has been completed, students must take at least two Writing in the Disciplines (WID) courses at some point during the remainder of their undergraduate studies. These courses are taught by WID faculty located throughout the university in the various undergraduate major and minor degree programs.

Writing Center

The Writing Center has a satellite space in the Eckles Library on Mount Vernon Campus. All GW students, including both undergraduates and graduates, are able to access high-quality writing consultation services and assistance through the Writing Center.
